Doctoral Teaching Assistantships

The United States Sports Academy is offering a limited number of Doctoral Teaching Assistantships to those who are interested in pursuing a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree as full-time resident students. The purpose of the doctoral teaching assistantship is to augment and support the student's doctoral academic program.

Procedures for the selection and appointment of Doctoral Teaching Assistants.

1. Application: All doctoral students who seek a Doctoral Teaching Assistantship must:
1.1 Be admitted into the Ed.D. program as students in full standing prior to consideration for an assistantship.
1.2 Submit a written application for a Doctoral Teaching Assistantship in sport management.
Note: We accept applications for processing throughout the year.

2. Appointment: All applications for a Doctoral Teaching Assistantship will be reviewed and appointments will be made in accordance with the following procedure:
2.1 A committee consisting of the Assistant Dean for Doctoral Studies, the Chair of Sports Management and the Dean of Academic Affairs conducts a review of the application. An on-campus interview may be required.
2.2 The doctoral assistant committee will then forward a recommendation to the President for final approval and appointment.
2.3 Successful candidates will be notified as selected.
2.4 Upon approval of a Doctoral Teaching Assistantship appointment, an agreement will be processed and issued by the Division of Administration and Finance. This agreement is to be returned to the United States Sports Academy by the student within two weeks. Failure to return the agreement in a timely manner will render the agreement null and void.

3. Conditions of Employment:
3.1 Appointments are for a 12 month period requiring 20 hours of assigned duties per week on the Daphne, AL campus. Renewal of the annual agreement is subject to the mutual agreement of the Academy and the student. Ordinarily, the total length of time a student would receive a doctoral teaching assistantship is three years. Doctoral Teaching Assistants work under the conditions as stated in their appointment agreements.
3.2 In the event that a student awarded a Doctoral Teaching Assistantship resigns or is terminated for cause prior to the completion of the agreement, the student may be expected to repay any tuition waived during enrollment in the program.
3.3 Compensation includes a tuition waiver for six doctoral courses per year, an annual stipend of $15,000 and individual health care coverage.
3.4 The six semester-hour mentorship will be completed on the Daphne campus.
3.5 The tuition waiver does not cover required fees and the cost of textbooks.
3.6 The cost of courses taken at another institution to meet cognate requirements for the Ed.D. is the responsibility of the doctoral assistant.
