Philosophy of Shaolin Kung-Fu

As coaches and trainers, we are constantly looking for new ways to be more effective in our teaching, coaching, and training. We study successful coaches, winning plays, and the training routines of great athletes, along with our other personal experiences, to improve ourselves and those who we teach. With this in mind, the United States Sports Academy, in conjunction with the world-renowned Shaolin Temple in Henan Province, China, has created a course on the Philosophy of Shaolin Kung-Fu. For 1,500 years, the Shaolin Temple has been refining their practice and because of this, the Temple is known for having some of the most respected athletes in the world. This course will share some of their secrets for balancing the body and the mind to achieve unparalleled health and wellness.

The course covers:

  • Shaolin Ethics - the importance of developing a strong and moral character
  • Qigong – the practice of learning to focus and control internal energy called qi (or chi)
  • Meditation – learning to calm and order the mind
  • Chinese Medicine – acupuncture, acupressure and nutrition for a healthy body
  • Spiritual Foundations – the many facets of the spiritual history and development of the Shaolin Temple
  • Physical Training – the martial art practice and strengthening exercises
  • Shaolin Today and How it Applies to You – how the Shaolin Temple and its philosophy fit into today’s global society and how understanding this philosophy and history can benefit you

The core text of the course derives from the newly translated English version of the “Secrets of the Shaolin Temple: Martial Arts and Medicine Scrolls,” which comes from a 1,500-year-old Chinese manuscript that His Holiness Abbot Shi Yongxin gave to the Academy during his visit to the campus in November 2006.

After completing this course, you should have a greater understanding of the history, development, and elements that comprise the Shaolin philosophy. You should then be able to apply the principles from the teachings to all aspects of your personal and professional life. Anyone who is interested in learning new ways to think about training and coaching, as well as new ways to look at the world, would benefit from this course. This is a course for everyone!

The course, which costs $200, offers students who finish it a Certificate of Completion signed by His Holiness and Academy President and CEO Dr. Thomas P. Rosandich.
