Sports Medicine

Master of Sports Science Degree Program
A student interested in pursuing a degree in sports medicine may be accepted from a variety of backgrounds. Generally, undergraduate majors in biology, physical education, nursing, physical therapy or athletic training are most suitable. Those with strong backgrounds in the natural sciences are encouraged to apply. Students may be required to take prerequisite courses to quality for this major.
The graduate curriculum in sports medicine is designed to prepare our students for opportunities including athletic training at clinical and professional levels. Program objectives prepare the student for the prevention, management, evaluation and rehabilitation of athletic injuries, along with the multiplicity of demands involved with the successful operation of sports medicine programs at various levels.
Distance Learning
The Academy’s distance learning program requires that each student work with a faculty member, one-on-one, so that guided discovery facilitates learning using an online, asynchronous, computer mediated delivery method. Through rolling enrollment, students have the option of registering for online courses any time during the academic year. In addition, the asynchronous, online learning environment does not require any meeting times during the course of study.
All students must complete 33 hours of study in sports medicine. Aside from the 24 semester hours (21 required, three elective) in courses, students are required to do a nine semester hour mentorship consisting of 450 contact hours with an expert in the field. For examples of mentorship sites, visit the mentorship office.
